Joint statement at UN AI Governance Dialogue highlights need for digital infrastructure, skills and responsible frameworks
Global businesses have called for stronger policy frameworks to ensure wider and more inclusive adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), stressing that access to technology alone is not enough to unlock its economic and social benefits.
The joint business statement, coordinated by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) for the first UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, highlighted the need for investment in digital infrastructure, workforce skills, data systems and responsible governance to help individuals, businesses and communities benefit from the AI economy.
The statement brought together perspectives from companies across sectors and regions, outlining recommendations aimed at supporting the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence worldwide.
Infrastructure and Skills Identified as Key Priorities
Business representatives said successful AI adoption requires more than access to AI tools and depends on a broader ecosystem including reliable connectivity, computing capacity, high-quality data and skilled workers.
The statement called for greater investment in broadband and fibre networks, cloud services, data centres and computing resources, particularly in developing and least developed countries.
It also emphasized the importance of expanding AI literacy, digital skills and workforce training programmes to ensure people and organizations can use AI effectively and responsibly.
Businesses Urge Support for Innovation and SMEs
The statement highlighted the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), start-ups and local innovators in expanding AI adoption.
Businesses called for policies that support the development of locally relevant and multilingual AI applications while helping smaller companies access AI technologies and expertise.
The recommendations also encouraged stronger partnerships between governments, businesses, academic institutions and civil society to improve access to AI capabilities.
Call for Balanced AI Governance
The joint statement stressed the importance of creating responsible AI governance frameworks that encourage innovation while addressing potential risks.
Businesses called for AI regulations that are risk-based, flexible and internationally compatible, arguing that governance approaches should evolve alongside technological development.
The statement also highlighted the need for stronger trust and safety measures, including transparency, disclosure practices, testing standards and mechanisms for addressing user concerns.
Public-Private Cooperation Seen as Essential
The ICC-led statement said collaboration between governments and the private sector would be critical to accelerating inclusive AI adoption.
Businesses noted that companies can contribute technical expertise, infrastructure, investment and implementation experience to complement public policy efforts.
The statement was presented as part of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, which aims to explore practical approaches for ensuring that AI development contributes to economic growth, sustainable development and broader participation in the digital economy.
